4 Types of High-Range Vehicles

According to a recent study, electric vehicles can meet the needs of almost 90% of drivers. In other words, 90% of us don't need any more range than an affordable electric car can give us. In this case, the affordable vehicle used in testing was the Nissan Leaf. However, the industry is quickly moving towards affordable vehicles with much higher ranges. For example, the Tesla Model 3 boasts a 215-mile range and has an MSRP of $35,000.

On the non-electric front, we're seeing more and more steel being replaced by lighter metals in order to increase range and fuel efficiency. There's also a sizeable number of "touring" cars on the market, which are meant to go longer distances without refueling. Let's take a look at the vehicles that can travel farthest, in four categories.

Electric Vehicles

Tesla

Tesla is the undisputed leader in electric vehicles. The Model S can travel 294 miles before it must recharge. The Model X can do 234. That's enough to get from Washington DC to New York. As we said before, the Model 3 has a range of 215 miles. It's also about half the price of the other Tesla models.

Nissan Leaf

The leaf is arguably the most practical all-elective vehicle ever, due to its reasonable price tag and its 107-mile range. The interior of the Leaf is surprisingly spacious, with 24 cubic feet of cargo space behind folding rear seats.

Hybrids

Honda Accord Hybrid

The Accord Hybrid can go an incredible 754 miles without refueling. That is, in part, due to a 49 mpg city / 47 mpg highway fuel efficiency and an aerodynamic design. If you don't drive very much, you could go a month without putting gas in this thing. The Accord is one of the least expensive cars to own over 5 years, in addition.

Nissan Altima Hybrid

Although it will run out of power 70 miles before the Accord, the Altima still has a super-impressive range of 682 miles. Its $22,500 base MSRP might justify it's shorter range, since the Accord starts at $29,605. The Altima is punchy, considering its engine size.

Diesels

Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTec

With a range of 886 miles, the 2016 E250 BlueTec travels extremely far on a single tank of gas. We're sure something else will break the record again soon, however. This German sedan has a 2.1L, 195 hp engine that gets 42 miles per gallon on the highway and 28 mpg in the city. The gas-powered version can go 611 miles on a tank.

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel with 32-Gallon Tank

This truck has a range of 755.2 miles. To get the range, you have to make sure you get the larger gas tank, though. You'll get about 23 mpg, many fewer than some of the other vehicles on this page, but you'll have plenty of Ram power from the truck's 3.0L, 240 hp engine.

Gasoline Vehicles

Ford F-150 with Extended Range Fuel Tank

Ford recently made headlines for its use of lightweight materials that have reduced the F-150's weight by about 700 pounds. The result is a truck that will travel 792 miles on a single tank if you have the "extended range" option. That's impressive for a truck with a 2.7L engine.

Toyota Tundra

The Tundra provides an Asian alternative to the F-150 and the Ram. With a 38-gallon tank, it will go about 608 miles before reaching "E." It's powerful with, 310 hp at base, and it can tow about 6,400 pounds. Oh yea, and it's a Toyota. You can't be Toyota reliability.
